No matter what you do, your job is to tell your story

– Gary Vaynerchuk

This month’s The Entrepreneur’s Expert is Chris Hunter, Chief Marketing Hero and SEO Expert at Marketing Heroes.

I sat down with Chris and asked him to share some thoughts about what every entrepreneur needs to know about marketing and brand development. I will post the video of the interview on my web page – check out the link in the comments below. (Sorry in advance for the creeping camera movement, we do get a bit animated.)

Q: I talk a lot about how entrepreneurship is a team sport – with entrepreneurs having a “Fab 5” or a circle of 5 trusted advisers. How can a marketing expert bring maximum value to an entrepreneur’s Fab 5.

A: Marketing and branding professionals are laser focused on marketing trends, analytics, effective communication strategies, and visually creative. Marketing professionals need to be both creative (left brained) and analytical (right brained). Additionally, entrepreneurs have so much on their plates, an effective marketer and brand manager can take those tasks off the entrepreneur’s plate.

Q: What is the top thing that most entrepreneurs don’t realize about marketing and/ or brand building and the impacts that it has on their companies?

A: Consistency. In today’s world, your client is constantly being bombarded with images and information. If you want to get your brand message out, then you need to consistently be distributing valuable content. Don’t just try something and then pull back a week later because you don’t see immediate results.

Q: What are one thing that you are always keeping top of mind about marketing/ brand building with all the entrepreneurs that you are working with?

A: Being consistent across multiple platforms and focusing your advertising spend only on those people who are already aware of you (because of your other content).

Q: Can you look into your crystal ball and see major changes or disruption in the marketing industry that entrepreneurs need to be aware of?

A: Voice search. Siri, Alexa, and Google are making life easier for the majority of people. Entrepreneurs need to be aware of how they can position their brands to take advantage of voice technology. While lead generation via voice is not a reality today, it will happen soon.

Q: Share with us a time that you helped significantly push an entrepreneur towards their definition of success.

A: We have a client in the automotive space that had such an effective website and SEO strategy that they were outranking their main supplier. This led to the supplier asking them to adjust their pages so that it could be compliant with the fair use guidelines.

Q: Describe the entrepreneur that gets maximum value from working with you.

A: Established business owners who want to take their marketing to the next level. They have an effective sales process.

Q: Tell us 1 fact about you that most of the world doesn’t know and how can entrepreneurs get in touch with you?

A: In 2012, in order to raise awareness for pancreatic cancer, which my father passed away from, I rode on a road bike from College Station, Texas to Washington D.C. in 23 days. This is obviously a very important cause to me and I was honored to be able to connect with the pancreatic cancer awareness network on the steps of the US Capital building.
